  After his basic training, he was assigned to an infantry company in the 3rd Marine Division. His first action with the Division came on 21 July 1944 when he took part in the first assult landings aimed at the recapture of Guam. During the night of 26 July 1944 he was mortally wounded during an intense Japanese counterattack aimed at dislodging the Marines from the island. After being evacuated to a hospital ship, PFC Barnes succumbed to his wounds on 27 July 1944.
