"Tourists Lose Lives in Flames After Accident Near Robbins

"Seek Third Man At Fire Scene; House Fired

"Tentatively identified as Mr. and Mrs. Jack Miller of Burney, Shasta county, a man and a woman were burned to death on the Alphonse Bulckaert farm, a mile south of Robbins, Sutter county, about midnight Sunday [i.e., Monday, Aug. 14].

"A companion of the couple, another man, who was supposed to have been in the building that burned, has not been accounted for by the authorities. No trace of his body was found in the ruins. It is surmised that he left the building some time [sometime] after Bulckaert saw him enter it with his two companions.

"The trio, apparently driving south on the highway had a mishap, their car leaving the highway, backing into an irrigation ditch. The woman went to the Bulckaert house to seek aid.

"Passing Driver Helps Save Home Owner

"Later one of the two men, the larger one, presumably Miller, was given permission to try to start a tractor in the place with which to attempt to drag the car out of the ditch. He was unable to start the diesel engine.

"It was about 9 p.m. when the strangers appeared at the ranch. After giving up the attempt to extricate the car they asked permission to stay at the farm until morning, which was granted, they being told they could occupy the storeroom next to the garage, in which was a bed.

"About midnight a truck passed the place and the driver discovered the garage building enveloped in flames. He arouse [aroused] Bulckaert and enabled him to get out, his house having already been ignited by the fire. Both buildings were burned, the owner saving a few possessions from the house.

"Car Is Only Means Of Establishing Names

"The garage and contents, including a car, the farm equipment and supplies in the storeroom, all were lost.

"The two burned bodies, nothing but the trunks and heads remaining, were where the bed in the storeroom had stood. Remnants of a dress and slip beneath the smaller body indicated that one to have been a woman, Deputy Coroner Ralph Trowbridge said after bringing the charred remains to the Jones morgue in Yuba City.

"Identity of the dead couple as Mr. and Mrs. Jack Miller is based upon the established fact that the car in which they were riding was registered in the name of Mrs. Gertrude E. Estes of Live Oak. When she was communicated with by Sheriff Bert Ullrey and District Attorney Loyd Hewitt she revealed that she had sold the car Friday and that the purchasers were the Millers, and that they were from Burney. They had made partial payment and were leaving on a trip to Treasure Island and other places.

      "Bulckaert Describes Victims of Tragedy

"According to Bulckaert, the three persons in the party that called at his place were about 30 years of age [Jack was 33, and Betty had just turned 35]. One man was large and the other of medium size. The woman was quite small--about 5 feet tall, he told the authorities. He had not asked their names. It was the body of the woman and of the larger man that were found in the embers.

"Mrs. Estes came from Live Oak to assist in the identification.

"An autopsy on the bodies was made Monday afternoon and the report showed no indication of foul play."

      2. Appeal Democrat, Aug. 17, 1939, front page:

"Ford Was Third At Fire Scene

"Don Ford, 23, of Plumas county, was the 'third party' at the scene of the fatal fire near Robbins early Monday morning, in which Mr. and Mrs. William Floyd Miller of Live Oak, formerly of Burney [they were from Burney], were cremated.

"Ford, seeing newspaper accounts of the tragedy Wednesday for the first time, went to the office of the Plumas county sheriff in the afternoon and told his story.

"Although he was at the scene when the Miller [Millers] retired to the spare room in the Bulckaert garage, and supplied them with a cigaret [cigarette] and three matches, Ford said he had departed immediately afterward and knew nothing of the fire that caused the death of the two. One of his matches is supposed to have started the fire that destroyed the garage and dwelling and brought death to the Millers.

"Tells of Drinking With Fire Victims

"Ford said he had drinks with the Millers after trying to help them extricate their car from an irrigation ditch. He had observed their plight as he drove by about 9 p.m. Saturday [i.e., Sunday, Aug. 13], and stopped to help. He remained while Miller attempted to start a tractor with which to pull the car from the ditch, and remained until the couple decided to remain at the farm until morning, his departure being about 11 p.m.

"It was after midnight when the fire was discovered and it was after 3 a.m. before the sheriff was notified of the tragedy.

"Funeral services of the Latter Day Saints church were held for the pair in the Gridley-Biggs cemetery Wednesday afternoon, a few relatives attending. Mrs. Miller was a native of Gridley [Oklahoma]. Besides her father, C. B. [V.] McCain of Sunnyvale, and brother, B. McCain of Santa Clara, she leaves a son, issue of a former marriage, who resides with his uncle in Santa Clara. A brother of Miller, who attended the funeral, is Virgil Miller of Stockton."
