    • Mistaken for Cougar, Tony Condodi Is Shot by Edward Harris, His Friend.

Prosecuting Attorney Dow After Hearing Story of Witnesses Convinced That Tragedy Was Accident.
Mistaking his companion for a cougar Edward Harris, one of a party of five who were fishing and hunting in the woods above Wilkeson, shot and killed Tony Condodi. Harris and his companions spent two days carrying the body out of the woods, and yesterday on reaching Wilkeson Harris gave himself up to Deputy Sheriff Kubicek. He was brought to the Pierce county jail but following an informal inquest yesterday afternoon in the offices of Prosecuting Attorney Lorenzo Dow, Harris was granted his freedom, the prosecutor declaring that the evidence showed plainly death was accidental.
      Carry Body Over Hills
Harris and his companions spent two days in carrying the body of Condodi out of the woods to Wilkeson, and were unable to report the affair to the sheriff’s office until Monday. Yesterday Deputy Sheriff Kubicek of Wilkeson brought Harris in to Tacoma. Other witnesses accompanied them and gave their stories to the prosecutor. No formal inquest was found necessary.
From the story told the prosecutor, Condodi, Harris, Joe Fix, Dave Major and Pete Donefaci made up a fishing party. Condodi, they said, told of having been up in the country where they planned to fish and said cougars had eaten his lunch while he was up stream. They decided to take their guns along and if any such varmint came into sight, to kill it.
Condodi and Harris had paired off, and the others had scattered some little time before the accident. Harris told the prosecutor that then he and Condodi had agreed not to cross to the other side of the stream. They were fishing in this manner, supposedly some distance apart, when Harris said he saw something dark on the other side of the stream moving in a crouched position.
The bank on the other side of the stream was low and covered with brush, moss and weeds and he could not make out clearly what it was. Assuming, however, that it was a cougar and having seen cougar tracks in the vicinity, he fired.
      Find Friend’s Body.
Fix, who was up stream, heard the shot and hurried down to see what Harris had shot.
“I’ve killed a cougar,” he said. “That’s good,” Fix replied, and the two fishermen crossed the stream to where they supposed a cougar lay. Instead they found Condodi dead.
The party was called together and started as soon as possible through the forest, underbrush, across streams and gullies toward Wilkeson. They were obliged to move slowly and it was not until Monday that they arrived in the town. Condodi was single and about 27 years of age. The men all work together in the coal mines at Wilkeson.
