OAK WOOD. - The body of Sherman Smith 34, resident of Glenburn neighborhood, north of this place, was taken from the water in the spillway in Lake Vermilion, Danville, below the dam, on Wednesday night of last week, after Mr. Smith had fallen from the catwalk at the upper dam of the Inter-state Water company about 10 o'clock that night. lt is believed he was instantly killed in the fall. With L. E. Neff and Elmer Grimes, two of his brothers- In-law, Mr. Smith had been fishing near the dam during (he evening, according to - Coroner John D. Cole. The other two men heard the crash as Smith struck the concrete apron below the dam, hut could not find the body, which apparently slipped down the incline into the water.
Coroner Cole, assisted by Robert Morris of Danville, brother-in-law of Smith, and others, using a boat, located the body in about six feet of water.
The catwalk from which Smith fell is about 25 feet out from the big dam, being used by workmen in making repairs to the gates. It is of concrete and has an iron railing on one side.
The accident occurred about the time it started raining, the rain being preceded by a strong wind. It is believed Smith lost his footing and fell on the apron below, as he was starting to the car that was nearby. His hat was found on the concrete apron.
