A horrible accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mathias Cox, in Nineveh township about 3:00, which resulted in instant death.
Ben Cox, son of Mathias Cox, in company with a neighbor, Fred Parsley, was sitting on a gate post at his home talking with Parsley.
They had been hunting.
Cox was telling how they fixed traps for rabbits in Kentucky, where the family formerly lived.
He had the gun in his hand and was dangling it as he talked.
He started to lean forward and made a motion to emphasize or illustrate what he was saying and hit the hammer of the gun.
The entire load struck the lower part of his face and tore upward, lacerating it in a frightful manner.
He fell to the ground and never breathed, apparently so swift and sure had been the death shot.
