Truck Driver killed by train
Ralph Dalgleish killed and Millard Guest Injured At S. F. Crossing
Considered one of the best and most careful drivers of the San Bernardino Mountain Auto Stage company, Ralph Dalgleish was instantly killed and his companion, Millard Guest, was slightly injured when the truck Dalgleish was driving was struck by Santa Fe passenger train No. 106 at the Tippecanoe crossing, near Victoria, yesterday afternoon.
Dalgleish lived only a few minutes after the accident. His right arm was torn loose from the body, several ribs were broken and his head badly cut.
According to young Guest, the truck approached the crossing at a slow rate of speed.
Willow trees abutting on the tracks would hide an approaching train from view, but no sound of one was heard.
The truck was loaded with lemons and it is thought the noise of the rattling boxes and that of the engine of the machine deadened the sound of the approaching train.
As the truck rolled onto the tracks the train was upon it and Dalgleish shouted to his companion to jump.
Guest obeyed and jumped clear of the tracks.
At the impact Dalgleish and the truck were carried down the tracks nearly 40 feet and when he was picked up was unconscious.
He died a short time after without regaining consciousness.
Guest was taken to the Loma Linda hospital and his injuries treated.
The body of Dalgleish was taken to the Mark B. Shaw funeral parlors and his patents at Rialto were notified.
The dead man roomed at the Y. M. C. A. in this city and had many friends here.
The funeral arrangements have not been completed and will be announced later.
Under Sheriff F. G. McLain investigated the accident.
